Keep it short and simple
The best first dates are easy to say yes to and easy to end politely.
An hour or two is plenty. You're only trying to answer one question: would I like to see this person again?
Ideas where you can really talk
- Drinks at a nice bar. Somewhere with comfortable seats and music you can talk over.
- Coffee or brunch. Daytime, relaxed, and easy to stay longer if you're getting on.
- A wine or cocktail tasting. Something to do together, and plenty to talk about.
- A walk along a river or the seafront. Walking side by side makes conversation easy.
- A gallery or exhibition. A relaxed setting, with a café for afterwards.
- Lunch somewhere quiet. Easier to talk than a busy evening restaurant.
Who pays?
There's no rule. Some couples split it, some take it in turns, and some let whoever asked pay. A quick, light-hearted word about it avoids any awkwardness.
Feel safe and comfortable
- Meet somewhere public, and make your own way there and back.
- Tell a friend where you're going and who you're meeting.
- Keep an eye on your drink.
